Patient Information

Gammarec® is part of a drug regimen used to treat Chronic Granulomatous Disease, or CGD. CGD is a genetic disorder, usually diagnosed in childhood, that affects some cells of the immune system and the body’s ability to fight infections effectively. CGD is often treated (though not cured) with antibiotics, antifungals, and Gammarec®.

What Gammarec® is used for:

  • Gammarec® is used to reduce the frequency and severity of serious infections due to chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a disorder that runs in families. This drug is often used along with antibiotics to help prevent these serious infections.
  • Gammarec® is also used to slow the worsening of malignant osteopetrosis, another disorder that runs in families, that affects bones, nerves, and blood.
  • Gammarec® is the same as a protein that your body naturally produces (interferon). In the body, it is thought to work by affecting cell function/growth and the body's natural defenses (immune system) in many ways. Adding more interferon may help your body fight off serious infections.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist before using Gammarec® if :

  • You are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as dry natural rubber/latex found in the packaging), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
  • You have heart disease (such as angina, irregular heartbeat, congestive heart failure), liver disease, seizure disorder, blood cell disorders (such as anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia).

Know all the medicines you take. Keep a list of them with you to show your doctor and pharmacist.

Who should not take Gammarec®:

Don’t use Gammarec® if you are allergic to interferon-gamma, E coli-derived products,

or any ingredients contained in the product.
